Translations into Turkish
There are 80 million native Turkish speakers worldwide. The Turkish linguistic area covers the national territory of Turkey today, Germany – where around 2 million speakers live – and in Turkish Cyprus. Turkish originates from the Oghuz languages spoken by tribes living in Central Asia and which were strongly influenced by the Ottoman language. This is evident in the close linguistic affinity of Turkish to Arabic.
It wasn’t until 1928 that the Arabic characters were renounced and the Latin alphabet was introduced for Turkish. Primarily the dialect spoken in Istanbul has become established as the literary or standard language of the Turks and is understood by the majority; only the Turkish hinterland and the Anatolian region, in particular, have a strong dialectical slant.
